There are many types of filtration systems for home aquariums, you need to know the filtration method and filter types at the beginning when you want to trip your fish-keeping journey, then choose the suitable filtration for your fish tank.

Fish tank filtration types

Filter types: side filter, side filter with multi-layer drip filter, back filter, bottom filter, auto top off system, swamp filter, etc.

These filters can be combined freely according to your need.

Filtration ways: top filtration, internal filtration, side filtration, bottom filtration

Below is a briefly introduce the pros and cons of these filtration types, and hope you will know which one to choose after reading.

Fish tank filtration pros and cons

1. Tank top filter - not suitable for grass tank

Pros: it is easy to maintain, suitable for physical isolation. The top filter names "waterfall filter" which can aerated tank surface and dissolved oxygen for fish.

Cons: It is recommend that the volume of the top filter should not be too big because it will affect the tank appealing. Because the water flow of the tank top filter is turbulent, it will lead to the escape of co2 in tank, if the water is sprayed into the water, this problem will be more serious, but not all plants need CO2, and you can choose to add extra CO2 to the tank with a jar or or liquid.

2.Aquarium internal filter - Suitable for grass tank

Pros: Aquarium internal filter is compact, small, easy to install and will not lead to co2 escape.

Cons: It is not easy for daily maintenance, most of all, the physical and biochemical treatment capacity is lower than the side filter.

3. Tank side filter

Pros: it has a large internal volume and can accommodate more biochemical materials with a strong processing capacity.

Cons: poor aesthetics, occupying too much space in the tank, low physical and biochemical efficiency.

4. Tank bottom filter

Pros: it has a strong processing capacity that can be hidden in the tank to complete a submarine world.

Cons: tank bottom sand easily blocks the filters pipe. Assume it is a grass tank with bottom fertilizer, the filter will lead to the loss of the fertilizer in the substrate, and you need to add bottom fertilizer regularly.

Mainly aquarium filter

According to the filtration method, there are mainly filters: waterfall filter, external canister filter, internal canister filter, and auto top off kit.
