The Role of Volcanic Rocks in Aquariums

Volcanic rock plays an important role in filtering and adsorption in aquariums, besides stabilizing water quality, it can also promote the growth of aquatic plants. It is a kind of aquarium rock material with a wide range of uses.

The role of Volcanic rocks in aquariums

In the aquarium, the requirements of volcanic rock are relatively strict, so aquarists are concerned about how to choose the right volcanic rock very much.

Red Volcanic rock can have a color-attracting effect on fish and shrimp. It is better to have a specific weight that can sink in the fish tank, but, it is also well to use one that can float in the water. The holes of the rock should be rich and fine. The hardness should be high, so as to avoid dropping slag in the tank.

Due to the porous characteristics of volcanic rocks, it is conducive for aquatic plants to climb and root, and the various minerals dissolved in the rocks are not only beneficial to fish growth, but also provide fertilizer for aquatic plants.

Most of the fish, especially Rajsh Cichlasoma, are not in a community tank, they will also be lonely, and Rajsh Cichlasoma has the habit of fiddling with rocks to create a home, so the lightweight volcanic rocks become great fish tank decorations for it to play.

Choose the best Volcanic rocks

The best Volcanic rock is produced in dry mountainous areas, with low rainfall and humidity, the corrosion degree should be small, and the hardness is relatively high.

The black ones can be used as filter material in aquariums. The large orifice Volcanic rock is suitable for cultivating mossy, and the small orifice rock is suitable for cultivating nitrifying bacteria, EM bacteria, or photosynthetic bacteria, volcanic rock is a natural bacteria house. The best way to cultivate bacteria is to use rock that can't see the hole and is very light.

If the Volcanic rock orifice is uneven, but the specific gravity is moderate, it is a realistic choice. The large rock orifice can adsorb the feces and residue of fish and shrimp in the tank, and the small orifice can accept the residence of beneficial bacteria. Most aquarists use small orifice rocks to tie the moss for aquascape. For aquascape, black and red Volcanic rock can be used mostly, it is depending on personal preferences and hobbies. Generally speaking, the ones with large orifices are more popular and have a look grand for aquariums.

Notes for choosing volcanic rock

1 Real volcanic rock's surface has a lot of small holes, it can play the same role as the ceramic ring to cultivate nitrifying bacteria, while the fake rock is red clay with very few small holes.

2 The weight of the volcanic rock is lighter than ordinary sand, while the weight of the fake is very heavy.

3 Because Volcanic rock is a natural aquarium substance when it is burned at a high temperature, it will be red, burned by a slightly lower temperature will be light red, then will be black, so there are different colors of Volcanic rocks.

4 When cleaning the Volcanic rock, it will not lose color, and very hard.
